Members of the Columbia-Richland Fire Department got the opportunity to etch their names in history at a ceremony to celebrate the rehabilitation of one of Columbia’s most iconic buildings.

Firefighters and officers of the department were on hand at the Babcock Building on August 9, 2023 as developers marked the reconstruction of the structure’s iconic cupola. This comes nearly three years after CRFD crews saved parts of the building from a devastating 3-Alarm fire.
The fire, which occurred on September 12, 2020, tore through much of the Babcock Building’s interior and caused the cupola to collapse. Throughout the day department crews were cycled in and out of the Bull Street District in order to keep the fire under control. It was one of the largest fires that CRFD responded to in its recent history.
