Several gas line breaks that were caused by an internet service provider working in the Columbia area prompted CRFD to take action.
Department crews were in Elmwood Park on Friday November 17, 2023 to assess gas lines in the neighborhood for any detectable leaks. It came just days after the Columbia-Richland Fire Department issued a ‘Stop Work’ order on the Lumos company and its subcontractors for all projects they have planned in the city.
Crews working to install fiber-optic cables for Lumos were responsible for causing several gas line breaks in Elmwood Park and surrounding communities. Each time a gas line was cut CRFD fire crews responded along with Dominion Energy to contain and fix the issue.

3rd Shift crews on HAZMAT 1 & 2 worked with Ladder 7 to sweep Gadsden, Lincoln & Park streets from Elmwood Street to Chester Street on November 17. After their work was complete no detectable gas leaks were found.
If you live in the Elmwood Park area and have any concerns about a smell of gas, please call 9-1-1 immediately! Our firefighters will come out and check.
