CRFD Youth Academy to Return for Second Year in July 2023

The Columbia-Richland Fire Department is excited to announce its summer Youth Academy for students between the ages of 14 and 19 from July 10th through the 21st of 2023. Area teens who are interested in participation in this youth academy should contact the Columbia Urban League by July 3, 2023 by calling 803-799-8150 and speaking with Jerry Screen Jr. or Regina LaBrew.

“Last year this program provided great exposure for our youth on the inner workings of the fire department that serves their communities,” said Columbia-Richland Fire Chief Aubrey D. Jenkins, “Our goal with the program is to not only give participants an inspiring two week experience but also hopefully enhance their desires to pursue careers in the fire service.”

CRFD launched the summer youth academy last July. The program focused on giving area youth an inside look at their fire department while also teaching them valuable, life-saving skills that are essential to career development. The Columbia Urban League is a multi-service, non-profit organization that empowers African American, underserved and disadvantaged citizens to become productive and contributing members of society. Last years academy concluded with a graduation ceremony where each child received a certificate of completion.

“Work experience is an evidence based best practice that promotes youth development,” said J.T. McLawhorn Jr. who is president and CEO of the Columbia Urban League, “Also, it enhances youth confidence, improves interpersonal skills and exposes youth to the importance of work ethics and how to make good decisions”

CRFD and the Urban League is not only encouraging area youth to apply to this year’s camp. Also, we are requesting that anyone interested in supporting the academy to please contact the Columbia Urban League.

“This program is focused on laying the foundation for our youth to secure careers serving our city and our county while earning a livable income,” Chief Jenkins said, “We hope the community will be generous in supporting our mission.”

From July 10th  through July 21st participants in the academy will report to CRFD each weekday for about four hours per day. During that time they will take part in discussions that cover the history of the fire department as well as an overview of what goes into daily operations. The youth also will receive lessons in basic life-saving medical care (i.e. CPR, tourniquet usage) as well as how to use a fire extinguisher. In addition, participants will participate in a workshop for resume preparation and career planning.

Department members are joined by Columbia Urban League President J.T. McLawhorn on May 4, 2023 to announce this year’s summer academy.
