CFD sends teams to help in aftermath of Florence

As parts of the Carolinas continue to recover from the impacts of Tropical Storm Florence, Columbia-Richland Fire is taking steps to lend a hand.

Specifically that support is coming in the form of sending firefighting equipment and manpower to affected areas.

CFD crews leave Columbia Tuesday to help the city of Hartsville after Tropical Storm Florence.

On Tuesday a nine-man team from CFD left Richland County for Hartsville, South Carolina. Two engine crews will be on duty there providing 9-1-1 support until late Wednesday. The mission came in response to support requests from the Hartsville Fire Department and Darlington County Emergency Management Department.

This comes less than a week after Columbia-Richland Fire sent a medical bus to help with coastal evacuations ahead of the storm.

A total of seven firefighters completed missions in the department’s Medical Emergency Response Vehicle (MERV) over a period of two days. From Wednesday, September 12 through Friday, September 14 the team successfully transported about 20 people needing medical care from locations in Murrells Inlet and Conway.

The department’s MERV 1 evacuation team successfully moved about 20 people out of coastal areas ahead of Tropical Storm Florence.

The successful work of the MERV 1 team was highlighted in recent reports by WLTX News 19 and WACH FOX News.
